Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the identification, assessment and acknowledgement of the full range of an individual’s skills, competencies, knowledge and work ethos obtained through informal training, certificated learning, non-accredited courses, workshops, on-the-job experience and life experience. The learning and experience is compared against the learning outcomes required for a specific qualification. Further information about RPL in South Africa can be found here.

Applicants that do not meet the formal entrance criteria for the intended academic program they wish to enter can apply as RPL candidates by submitting the Portfolio of Evidence Assessment (POL) form in addition to their application.

Do not pay for the RPL until advised to do so by the Admissions Team

Admissions will provide candidates with access to the POL only once the online application has been submitted and the application fee is received.

The RPL assessment is only open to individuals applying for programmes at the UCT Graduate School of Business.

Please note that the following documents are required before you start the submission process:

  1. A completed Portfolio of Learning Application Form
  2. Electronic copies of short courses completed (work and non-work related)
  3. Electronic copies of any work-related evidence (e.g. performance appraisals, testimonials, job descriptions etc.)
  4. Electronic copies of personal achievements (e.g. awards, etc.)

Please note the following:

  1. Ensure that you have completed all sections and have all relevant documentation at hand before submitting online. Incomplete POL’s cannot be processed.
  2. Once you have submitted you cannot make any changes to your application.
  3. Documents may be submitted only in pdf format.
  4. Please note that minimum word limits are required. Your POL will be deemed incomplete if these minimum levels are not met.
  5. Find out more about the skills and competencies that we are looking for in our RPL assessment.

RPL applicants are required to first submit the formal programme application, before being provided with access to the online Portfolio of Learning portal.
