Dr  Dion Forster


Dr Dion Forster is the Director of the Beyers Naude Centre for Public Theology and the Head of Department, Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology in the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University. His research is in Philosophical Ethics primarily focused on issues of human dignity in relation to political ethics and economic ethics in South Africa.

Dion holds two PhD degrees – a PhD in Systematic Theology (SA, 2005) which focused on notions of intersubjective identity in relation to African social identity ethics and cognitive neuroscience. His second PhD (Radboud, 2017) focuses on the politics of forgiveness in South Africa. It investigated the relationship between social identity complexity and social and political hermeneutics.

He is the author or editor of 10 books and numerous scholarly articles. His most recent books are: 'Between Capital and Cathedral: Essays on Church and State relationships' 2012, UNISA press (with Wessel Bentley), and 'The (im)possibility of forgiveness?' 2017, SUN press.

Dion serves as an Editor for numerous international scholarly journals, including the International Journal for Public Theology and the Methodist Review. He consults for numerous civil society organisations and companies on ethical issues. Among others, he serves on the board of Unashamedly Ethical and is a Member of the Expert Network for the World Economic Forum.
