PGDip in Development Finance Curriculum

There are five compulsory courses that make up the Postgraduate Diploma in Development Finance:

COURSE 1: Trade Finance

COURSE 2: Environmental finance and sustainability investments

The following topics will be covered during this course: 

  • The theoretical basis for impact investing
  • Impact evaluation frameworks and how these can be integrated into traditional risk and return models
  • Impact tools and tactics currently available to impact investors
  • The role of funds, fund managers and other intermediaries and vehicles in impact investing
  • Impact investment structures and models
COURSE 3: Risk management and sustainability of development finance institutions

The following topics will be covered during this course: 

  • The fundamentals of risk management
  • Risk of financial institutions: Overview, principles and framework in the context of emerging markets
  • Risk factors in development financing
  • Risk identification and measurement in DFIs
  • Risk monitoring and controls in DFIs
  • Sustainability models of development finance institutions
COURSE 4: Public-private partnerships for development financing

The following topics will be covered during this course: 

  • The general properties of public-private partnerships in the development finance context
  • PPP approaches and types, and their opportunities and challenges
  • Economic and network opportunities of PPPs
  • Economic challenges in PPPs in terms of the transaction costs and principal-agent relationships
  • The opportunities and challenges of public-private cooperation in the planning, implementation and management of the PPP projects
  • The opportunities and challenges of PPP procurement
COURSE 5: Banking and finance in emerging markets

The following topics will be covered during this course: 

  • Introduction to emerging markets banking and finance
  • The economics/principles of banking, finance and insurance 
  • Regulations and risk management of financial institutions
  • Empirical research in banking, finance and insurance in emerging economies
  • Basel Accords and their impact on banking and financial services in emerging markets
