Event Information

The UCT GSB exists to engage an African and global business community,  to navigate complexity with equal dexterity in their professional disciplines and identity as a practicing leader. We explore ideas on what strategy and leadership might look like in the context of novel operating environments,  to innovate and generate solutions born out of the unique challenges and opportunities presented in one's executive practice.

Our mission is to create a community of executives, scholars, academics and leaders committed to culturally relevant, socially responsible, and profitable organizations that advance the agenda for economic prosperity and human flourishing on the continent.

The objective of this year’s Do-ference is to bring the practice of leadership and strategy to the forefront as key capabilities in one’s  personal and professional pursuit for enlightenment.

Funds raised through this initiative will provide access to scholarship opportunities offered to deserving individuals aspiring towards a  business qualification offered at the UCT GSB.

Be the Black Swan

Think out of the box and do the unedxpected!

The Black Swan theory links to business strategy and future thinking through the need to always be prepared for the unexpected. It is in reference to the disproportionate role of high-profile, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal in history, science, finance, and technology.

Coined by Nasim Nicholas Taleb (2001), the theory describes unpredictable events that happen outside of our control and have a huge impact on business. Events characterised by extreme rarity, major effect and the widespread insistence that are obvious in hindsight. The Digital Age (“Dot Com”Era) and Covid are perfect examples.
