POSITION: Associate Professor, Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership
QUALIFICATIONS: B.Sc. Physics (Hons), University of Natal | M.Sc. Astrophysics, UCT | PhD, UCT | Post Doctoral Fellowship Award, Complexity and Sustainability, National Research Foundation.
Camaren Peter (PhD) is an Associate Professor with the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership at the UCT Graduate School of Business. He holds a cum laude BSc (Hons) degree in theoretical physics, an MSc in astrophysics and a PhD in Business Administration. His PhD consolidated research that he had conducted at the CSIR on complexity theory based modeling for integrated sustainable development challenges. His current research and practice leverages complexity theory to prepare leaders and decision-makers to tackle the grand challenges of the 21st Century. These range from political, technological and socio-cultural transitions and their implications, to powerful global change phenomena such as urbanization, resource scarcity, ecosystems degradation and climate change.
Camaren is particularly concerned with their implications for the developmental trajectories of the Global South. Camaren has published widely in the policy domain and worked extensively with leaders, decision-makers, planners and stakeholders, within South Africa and across the African continent. He has also worked with a wide range of local and global institutions. He has also acted in an advisory and policy and decision-support capacity to numerous local, provincial and national government departments and agencies, as well as businesses and civil society organisations. Camaren’s first book – titled “Lazarus in the Multiple: Awakening to the Era of Complexity” (Zero Books, UK) – was published in 2016, and constitutes a post-humanist exploration of the 21st Century human condition.
