Broadening access to postgraduate education

The UCT GSB is committed to making funding and scholarship opportunities available to talented, motivated and deserving individuals who meet the entrance criteria for the MBA and who demonstrate that they have the potential to create a transformative impact on business and society.

Please note - you can only apply for a scholarship once you have started your application for the MBA programme.

Applicants who would like to apply for scholarship funding for the current application cycle need to complete their scholarship application prior to the closing date for MBA programme applications

Scholarships

The following scholarships are available for the MBA Modular programme:

The UCT GSB has scholarship funding available and is offering talented young South Africans and African citizens an opportunity to join its top-ranked academic programmes. Fully or partially funded scholarships are available for the MBA.

Candidates must meet the admission criteria for their respective programme and be accepted into the programme in order to receive the scholarship.

Candidates for the GSB Foundation Scholarship must fulfil two broad criteria:

  • Individuals who have been accepted onto the MBA programme at the UCT Graduate School of Business and offered a place in an upcoming class;
  • Driven individuals with a passion for the African continent and its drive towards business, government and societal relevance and excellence.

The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Bertha Foundation awards full and partial scholarships to nurture a new generation of social innovators and promote entrepreneurial solutions to help solve some of the urgent social and environmental problems of our time. To date the Centre has awarded over ZAR 7 million in funding to more than 60 students from across the African continent.

The Bertha Scholarship covers full or partial costs of the MBA (both full-time and modular) and the MPhil specialising in Inclusive Innovation programmes at the UCT GSB.

The Sainsbury Fellowships are awarded by the Sainsbury Management Fellows' Society (SA) to South Africans from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who are qualified engineering or science graduates that intend to: 

  • Continue to work in South Africa;
  • Continue to work in the engineering or science sectors or related sectors after completing the MBA programme.

Scholarships are either awarded for full-time or modular study and could include full or part funding of the tuition fees. A fully paid-for research fellowship for Cambridge University is also available for exceptional candidates who have a career path mapped with a specific employer in the engineering or science fields.

The Molteno Brothers' Trust is a charitable and educational trust founded by the Molteno Brothers in the Elgin valley. The aim of the Trust is to provide scholarships to full-time MBA students who come from agricultural and economics backgrounds and wish to pursue a career in this field post-MBA. Up to 75% of tuition fees will be paid per student.

The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence;
  • Financial need;
  • South African citizenship;
  • Intention to work in the agricultural sector after degree completion.

The Allan and Gill Gray Charitable Trust has established several bursaries to assist previously disadvantaged students undertaking the full-time MBA degree at UCT GSB. Preference will be given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are South African citizens or who are in possession of permanent residence certificates.

The bursaries will be awarded for one year only, and will be made to academically deserving students. They may not be held concurrently with other awards, unless permission has been granted by the Scholarship Committee.

The Centre for African Management Fund aims to provide financial support to applicants who have been accepted onto the MBA programme.

Bursaries will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need;
  • Disadvantaged socio/economic background;
  • Any other considerations adjudged by the UCT GSB Scholarships Committee to be relevant. 

Beneficiaries of the CAM scholarship need to have paid a minimum of 25% of the tuition fees before the award can be confirmed. Scholarship values may be adjusted from time to time, depending on the number of deserving applicants and the amount of funds available.
