The BHP Billiton Graduate programme has won awards three years running from the Australian Association of Graduate Employers as the best graduate programme in Australasia. It is designed and run by a consortium of international business schools – Melbourne Business School in Australia, the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business in South Africa, UAI in Chile and U21 Global online university in Singapore.
The two-year BHP Billiton Foundations for Graduates Programme is one of the most innovative in the resources industry and delivers the tools graduates need to build a highly rewarding career with the company. The company recruits from a variety of degree disciplines, including across the spectrum of engineering, science and business function degrees.

Graduates join BHP Billiton with a strong set of technical skills and the programme aims to supplement this with additional people and management skills to help them make strategic decisions, work with people from different backgrounds and to influence others. It includes extensive business and behavioural development opportunities and complements related BHP Billiton graduate development initiatives including induction, on the job experience, rotations and mentoring/coaching.

According to Alison du Toit, BHP Billiton Foundations for Graduates Programme Director (Africa) and co-designer, what makes the programme so revolutionary is the incredible level of international collaboration and the programme’s extremely high standards.

“BHP Billiton has strict standards, amongst others an unwavering focus on safety, and graduates entering the business are given an exceptional opportunity with this programme to develop themselves and learn the business – it’s a phenomenal jumpstart towards becoming a leader within the company,” she said.

The programme has had outstanding results and continues to be developed by a rigorous series of reviews based on extensive evaluation and feedback from delegates and the client company.
