AREAS OF EXPERTISE: Information systems and technology, Business strategy, Applied business strategy, Change management
For many years Paul Sulcas has been involved in IT education. His approach has been focused on equipping managers with the insights needed to understand the business value of IS/IT. Sulcas stresses that hardware, software and data communications are support tools for assisting management and users to achieve organisational objectives.
He is also a business strategy expert, and is responsible for the GSB's cap stone Company Analysis course, which involves teams of students applying what they have learned in the MBA classroom to 'real-life' situations by undertaking in-depth strategic analyses of participating companies and organizations. More specifically, as part of the CA process, the students are required to apply the models, templates and approaches learnt in the various academic disciplines. As such the course is extremely practical in the way it is presented and regarding the resultant outcomes. Additional applied strategy input is given to students through a very popular MBA course he presents - 'Contemporary Business Issues'. Here students study major South African, International and global issues (e.g. Corporate Governance) and businesses from a strategic point of view.
Sulcas has numerous international links and has been a visiting professor in strategy at the haifa Unviersity Business School in Israel. A number of articles written by him have been published in academic and professional publications. He also works, in a consulting capacity, for a number of commercial enterprises, as well as in charitable, not-for-profit and community-based organisations.
