OTHER RESEARCH ACTIVITY

  • Current primary interest is in the application of ‘Lean thinking’ to healthcare.  Three action learning approaches have been undertaken in the period 2003-2006.
  • In 2002: lead a Production Technology Study Mission to Germany by invitation of the German Federal Government, also contributing to and editing the final report to the South African Government.
  • In 2001: Case-based research on theme ‘What does good implementation look like?’
  • In 2000: study tour to Japan; SA workshops with Japanese consultant; organise and chair an international conference (Lean Summit) with ‘guru’ Dan Jones; various cases.
  • In 1999: Best practices initiative to introduce Japanese best practices to the South African shop floor (personally run two workshops, one with a Japanese consultant funded by Japanese aid money); South African data analysis of the 1998 Global Manufacturing Futures Survey; organise and lead two-week study tour to Japan (25 people); and various case studies prepared or initiated.
  • Have extensive links: among them are Boston University (Jeff Miller and Jay Kim), Cambridge University (Mike Gregory and staff of the Institute for Manufacturing), Cardiff Business School (Dan Jones and the staff of the Lean Enterprise Research Centre), Cranfield Business School (Mike Bourne and Andy Neely), University of Sao Paulo (Afonso Fleury and others at Industrial Engineering), Oxford University (Terry Hill), IPADE (Miguel Leon) and the Crummer School (Marty Starr).
  • Primary work has been in connection with the Global Manufacturing Research Project initiated by Boston’s Jeff Miller.
