Public Lecture: "The Utility of the Future"

presented by

Professor Ignacio Perez-Arriaga, MIT

Power utilities around the world are facing profound and disruptive change.  The costs of variable renewable energy, such as solar and wind, are falling rapidly and they are now often the cheapest new sources of grid-connected electricity. At the same time a range of distributed technologies—including flexible demand, distributed generation, energy storage, and advanced power electronics and control devices—is creating new options for the provision and consumption of electricity services. Prof Perez-Arriaga has led a path-breaking project at MIT in the USA to understand these changes and to propose a framework for regulatory and market reform for power utilities of the future.

This lecture offers a unique opportunity to hear about the very latest global developments and to consider implications for South Africa.
