Programme Summary
Institutional investors representing US$ 18 trillion and located in 36 countries, including the South African Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) are signatories to the United Nation’s Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). This number demonstrates the growing strength worldwide of the emerging and powerful concept of responsible investment that is changing the investment industry and impacting on traditional assumptions of doing business. This course will give you the tools and knowledge to understand what it means to be a responsible investor.
The course will include coverage of the following aspects:
- A background introduction to the emerging movement and concept of responsible investment worldwide: from ethical investing to responsible investment practices
- Understanding the new thinking in the pension fund industry worldwide. This will include a review of the concept of fiduciary duty, pension funds liability and the universal shareownership theory.
- Understanding of the responsible investment value chain
- Providing practical guidance on how to become a responsible investor. The course will supply a responsible investment toolbox kit on different type of share classes
- Creating an RI portfolio. This exercise will enable the delegate to put into practice the RI Toolbox, to debate how to integrate environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into company valuation and shareholder value maximization.

This course is aimed at both public and private sector finance professionals: fund management, pension fund and corporate management professionals; also sustainability and investor relations managers working for South African corporations willing to understand the expectations of domestic and international institutional responsible investors.
