2012 Strategic Project Management

Introduction

Programme summary

In today’s turbulent and complex environment, the ability to manage and achieve significant organisational goals has become a core skill for senior, portfolio, project, and programme managers. This 5-day programme is designed to equip experienced staff with the concepts and skills to enable them to drive value from the execution of strategy through strategic projects and programmes.

Delegate profile

This senior-level programme is for managers seeking to optimise the business benefits from programmes and portfolios of projects. It is targeted at managers who want to understand the key technical and people related ideas, processes and issues, in order to make better use of resources in alignment with the strategy and business critical objectives of their organisation.

Delegates should be able to contribute their experience and intuition and be prepared to operate in a master-class format. I.e. they should want to improve their ability to think strategically and critically, and to problem-solve in group settings. Delegates should have the desire to improve their interpersonal and influencing skills through clarity of thought and decisive action based on understanding key tools, techniques and approaches.

An understanding of project management is recommended but not essential. This course is not an introduction to project and programme management.

Programme benefits

A successful project happens because of four distinct components. First, was it the right project? Second, did the organisation support it? Third, was the project was well defined and planned? Finally, was it executed well? Most courses in project management tend to focus on the last two aspects; this course however focuses more on the first two. A further view taken by this programme is that 4 aspects need to be considered to ensure successful implementation of strategic project/programmes. The aspects are Process, Tools and Technology, People, and Organisational Culture and this programme examines and integrates each of these aspects.

This programme is presented in a unique facilitative and participative manner with extensive exercise. Delegates are fully immersed in this unique learning experience. Topical and relevant are addressed such as:

  • The current situation in respect of the effectiveness of project management
  • Positioning PM in the organisation
  • Trends – what is changing
  • Project selection, prioritisation, and portfolio management
  • Programme Management
  • Facilitating tough interventions – capital reviews or resource allocation
  • Ethics
