POSITION: CEO Lean Institute Africa
Dr Anton Grütter is the CEO of the Lean Institute Africa, one of eighteen institutes affiliated with the Lean Global Network. After establishing a property development start-up in the 1980’s he became the general manager of a group of worker owned furniture manufacturers before becoming an academic after completing his MBA in 1992.
He has taught operations management at several South African universities and is a visiting professor teaching on the MBA programme at Shanghai University. He has taught on the MBA and other programmes of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town. His PhD research was on the effective implementation of shop-floor improvement teams and his textbook “Introduction to Operations Management” was published by Heinemann in 2010.
He has presented at many South African and international conferences such as the 2014 Lean Enterprise Institute Summit in China and at the 2017 CCBRT Lean Healthcare conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He has advised organisations in manufacturing, commerce, government and the NGO sector on the design and deployment of Lean Management Systems to achieve sustainable continuous improvement. He has also coached CEOs and senior management in the private and public sectors on adopting the lean leadership behaviours that support lean transformation.
